Concrete Sidewalks & Walkways in Pittsburg & Contra Costa County That Clear Trip Hazards for Good
Walkway jobs cover public sidewalk panels, front entries and garden paths, cut out to the failure, repoured on a compacted base and sloped to drain.
Tree roots, settling fill and shifting clay lift concrete walkways into trip edges. On the public sidewalk fronting your property, that edge is usually your responsibility to fix.
Patching a lifted panel rarely holds, because the root or the soft base that raised it is still sitting there.
We cut out the failed sections, deal with whatever caused the movement, and repour on a compacted base with control joints placed where the concrete will actually want to crack.
Slope is set so water runs off the walkway instead of sitting on it through the winter.

Sidewalk and Walkway Questions We Get Weekly
Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my house?
In most Contra Costa cities the adjoining property owner is responsible for maintaining and repairing the sidewalk fronting their lot, even though it sits in the public right-of-way. The rule varies by city, so we confirm it before quoting.
Do I need a permit to replace a sidewalk?
For work in the public right-of-way, almost always. Cities issue an encroachment permit and inspect the finished work. Private walkways inside your property line usually do not need one.
Can you fix a walkway lifted by tree roots?
Yes, and the roots have to be dealt with or the new concrete lifts too. Depending on the tree we cut and shield the offending roots, adjust the panel layout, or route the path around them.
How wide should a walkway be?
Front entry walks are usually four feet so two people can walk side by side. Garden and side paths work fine at three feet. Public sidewalk width is set by your city standard.
Should you grind a trip hazard or replace the panel?
Grinding is a cheap short-term fix and it does not stop further lifting. Where the base or a root is the cause, replacing the panel is the repair that actually lasts.
